Nokia announces MeeGo “pure touch screen” smartphone

Finnish phone giant Nokia has confirmed that it will ship the Nokia N9 and it will run on the MeeGo 1.2 Harmatten mobile operating system (OS).

Earlier this year Nokia announced a partnership with Microsoft to use Windows Phone 7 on its devices, but Nokia also said that it would still ship its first MeeGo device in 2011.

The device boasts an impressive list of specifications, including 3.9-inch WVGA (854×480) AMOLED display, pentaband WCDMA with support for 14.4 Mbps HSPA, 1GB RAM, 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss rear camera and a 1GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor with PowerVR SGX530 graphics.

It also does away with any buttons on the front of the device, with Nokia saying that the device can be operated from its touch screen alone.

According to the press release, the Nokia N9 will be available in three colours: black, cyan, and magenta. It will also come in 16GB and 64GB variants.
